Three main causes of damp is rising damp, penetrating damp and ventilation issues. We are happy to give you advice on any of these issues affecting your home.
One of the most common forms of dampness is condensation. Condensation is created when moist warm air carrying water vapour touches a cold surface. We can clearly see this on our windows and bathroom tiles but when it becomes a problem is when we cannot see the water on surfaces. This promotes mould growth and deterioration of these surfaces. Every household generates large amounts of moisture within the building fabric through baths, showers, cooking, drying clothes, even breathing creates moisture! All the water vapour and moisture vapour we now generate remains trapped in our properties! The end result being condensation issues.
Signs of condensation:-
1. Smells - a musty smell in rooms and cupboards
2. Water on the inside of windows
3. Mould growth and dampness in corners
4. Walls with water running down
5. Black spots
6. Fungal growth within wardrobes
7. Bed clothing feeling cold and damp

Fungal decay occurs in timber when it has become wet for some time and is the result of the attack by one of a number of wood destroying fungi which attack wood to feed and grow next generation spores so is an on going and growing problem. The problem can affect all property's both historic and modern.
